CARLA HANSON

Carla Hanson can participate in radio, television and print media interviews and demonstrations to promote the exhibit in your market area. She is also available to speak at openings, gallery walks, lectures and fundraisers. Her extensive knowledge of masks and masking traditions, and her engaging style of audience interaction has made her a popular guest speaker at museums and schools.

I grew up in Waterville, Kansas. The first time I dressed for Halloween I knew masking was special. Taking many anthropology classes at Kansas State University and meeting people from other cultures was an enlightening experience for me. In August, 1992, I purchased my first ethnic mask. Two days later I had three masks; a month later – four. Now my collection has grown into the hundreds, representing more than forty countries and many Native American nations.

I share them with you today, because the masks are truly wonderful pieces of art, and I feel we can learn much from other cultures.

The masking traditions can teach us how these cultures deal with their lives and their environment.

I wish to thank my family and friends who have encouraged me through my mask journey, and who brought me masks from their world travels.

My thanks to Paul Benson, conservator, who guided me in protecting, cleaning, repairing and mounting my collection. I especially want to thank Clifton Hall of Photographic Creations for his beautiful images.
